3 Song Feature: Dakota Chris (Kotà), Fashone, and Aries Marquis

In a world ruled by aesthetics, the colorful and spirited depiction of how Dakota Chris (Kotà) presents himself to the world could also be an artist behind literally ANY sound or genre of music. As an R&B music fan and using the references that come naturally to me, this record feels like Dakota toying with the sounds and sensibilities of the genre, and this gives us a new aspect of his artistry to enjoy. There are no boxes put on him and in surveying his other work, you cannot deny that.

In “LOVE Vs. MONEY” Dakota delivers a rousing hook that sounds oh so smooth. The elements in the song give it a special vibe that feels unconventional and dare I say, Avant Garde. The whooshing I hear on the track reminds me of something from Local Natives, Bombay Bicycle Club, or Memory Tapes – like some real indie stuff. But for true lovers of R&B, there is a solid foundation that you can feel while still enjoying the energy from everything else. The lyrics are a bit difficult to understand, but maybe achieving the ultimate vibe was the strategy for the record. The line about having dreams that money can buy is the hallmark of the record, in my opinion, and maybe for Dakota as an artist too. Considering the untapped, limitless levels of creativity and ingenuity that exist in us all, that money WISHES it could buy, is an amazing thought.

Dakota is no stranger to this, just check out his YouTube channel that goes back nearly a decade. There is real evolution both in his flow and aesthetic. What I get from hearing more of his music is a burgeoning artist who is daring to express himself fully and intentionally. It makes me think what kind of world we would live in if everyone did what was in their heart and followed the voice within. If you need inspiration on where to start, follow Dakota on his journey and hit play on “LOVE Vs. MONEY” nowwwww!

When I first heard “Back On” I was driving and felt flat out flabbergasted lol (you like that alliteration moment?) Fashone is talking some ISH and not holding back. I cannot help but wonder if this song reached the intended party! I was also wondering if we would hear some singing on the record, judging off the first half mainly consisting of some very direct and specific story-telling that is heard loud and clear. Midway through we get to hear Fashone’s vocals that are complimented by some nice backgrounds that feel like Fashone put some detailed work into the record.

What is interesting about “Back” is that it sounds like Fashone comes full circle, blasting the situation he is in and yet acknowledging that his experience was a hurtful one as well. Musically, the record gives just the right amount of space for the lyrics to be the star; no doubt the intention given the topics being addressed through the song. The music sounds like a nice bridge between past releases and what we might expect from Fashone moving forward. Maybe some more deeply honest and vulnerable records? I hope that this outlet was both cathartic for him and served the purpose he hoped for. I feel like we will be seeing more sides to Fashone in the upcoming releases, so there is lots to watch out for!

Aries shares "Motivation" with us as his latest release, delivering a refreshing moment to slow down and enjoy some tenderness. With a song titled as such, it could be easy to expect the lyrical and overall feeling of the song to deliver inspiration, love, and celebration. While we do get that here, I think using the simplest words and music is the best way to convey the message. There is no room for confusion, and I believe that the listener could easily understand the concept. Aries described the record as:

Giving credit to the ladies who have been with me thru the thick and thin; ups and downs. The ladies that have trusted me to hear your pain and triumphs; the women that I write and sing about (and for) do inspire me. The women that have helped me on my 9 to 5s up to this music journey, the mothers that let me into their world, and many other women throughout my life...as a man, believe me when I say that you are valued and appreciated. I do what I do for you, and you do make me better. You really are my motivation.

Aries sounds sweet and the music feels stripped back, letting the lyrics come through with no barriers. Aries has a nice tone, and nothing falls flat for me, not once. His adlibs and runs are well timed and deliver some nice soul that hits the mark for me. As I have raised before in past reviews, I will never not mention or take notice of those male records that celebrate women in a wholesome and sincere way. I cannot help but consider how the music industry, by way of the internet, has had an influence in shifting the perception of music like this. Music with values, heart, and soul is so rare these days and I applaud anyone who is taking strides to not only create and promote it but embody it. Way to go, Aries!
